A Dhaka court has sentenced three men to death for the gang rape and murder of a teenage girl named Maria. The verdict was announced on March 25, 2025, by Judge Munshi Md. Moshiar Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4. The convicted individuals—Sajib (25), Rakib (23), and Shaon (26)—were also given seven-year prison sentences and fines for concealing Maria's body. Meanwhile, two other accused, Ali Akbar (22) and Riaz (22), were acquitted.
Maria’s body was discovered in a pond in Keraniganj on June 11, 2022, prompting an investigation that led to the suspects’ arrests and confessions. Throughout the trial, testimony from 19 witnesses was presented. Among the convicted, Sajib remains at large, and an arrest warrant has been issued against him.
