Bangladesh and China have engaged in high-level talks to advance the proposed Bangladesh-China Maitri General Hospital project, expected to expand healthcare access in northern Bangladesh and boost medical tourism, officials said Monday. During a Dhaka meeting, China’s Ambassador Yao Wen and Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, highlighting the hospital initiative and regional health improvements.
The planned 1,000-bed modern hospital in Nilphamari Sadar aims to provide advanced specialized care, reducing the need for patients to travel to Dhaka or abroad. The facility is expected to serve nearby districts and attract international patients, promoting medical tourism while easing pressure on city hospitals. Bangladesh’s health ministry has instructed authorities to prepare a master plan and cost estimate, targeting completion by 2028 on a 25-acre site near Darwani Textile Mill. Both countries emphasized the project as a symbol of enduring friendship and partnership.
