Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is now considering DUCSU Vice President Shadik Kayem as a possible candidate for Dhaka-8 in the upcoming national election. The party’s Assistant Secretary General, Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, confirmed the matter on Saturday. According to party sources, Shadik’s popularity among young voters, his campus politics background, and his organisational work at the local level have placed him at the top of their shortlist, though nothing is officially announced yet.
Earlier, Jamaat had selected central working committee member and Dhaka South Naib-e-Ameer Advocate Dr Helal Uddin for this seat, and he had already started campaigning. Shadik Kayem became DUCSU VP in September with 14,042 votes as the Shibir-backed candidate, defeating his closest rival who got 5,708 votes. Several other central and hall union posts were also won by Shibir-backed candidates in that same election.
For Dhaka-8, BNP has already nominated Mirza Abbas, while Osman Hadi from Inqilab Moncho announced he will run as an independent. In a Facebook post today, Osman Hadi mentioned that the race would be more enjoyable if Shadik Kayem also contested. Earlier, the NCP had named Sujon—the rickshaw puller known for saluting students during the July revolution—as their candidate for the same seat.
