A court has ordered the seizure of three houses and 474 percent of land belonging to former Manikganj-2 lawmaker and folk singer Momtaz Begum. The order was issued on Tuesday (January 13) by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Fayez following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), court officials confirmed.
According to the order, the seized properties include a five-storey residential building built on 2,500 square feet of land in Mohakhali DOHS, a two-storey ancestral house in Manikganj, and a four-storey building covering 2,109 square feet in Manikganj Sadar, which houses the Momtaz Eye Hospital.
The ACC’s Deputy Director Mohammad Sirajul Haque filed the application, stating that Momtaz Begum and individuals and institutions linked to her are under investigation for alleged money laundering. As the probe is ongoing, the commission sought the freezing of bank accounts and seizure of immovable assets through the court.
Momtaz Begum, a former Awami League MP, went into hiding following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024. She was arrested by police from the capital’s Dhanmondi area on May 13 last year and has remained in jail since then.
