Police arrested Akhtar Hossain, convener of the Sylhet district branch of the National Citizens Party (NCP), in connection with a scuffle and fight at an Iftar mahfil organized by the party.
He was apprehended early Sunday from Ausha village in Sylhet Sadar upazila. Shahparan Police Station's Officer-in-Charge, Monir Hossain, confirmed the arrest to The Daily Star, stating that the case was filed after a clash broke out at the event in Sylhet on Saturday.
Mahbubur Rahman Shanto, who was injured in the altercation, filed a case naming nine individuals and others unidentified. Police later conducted a drive and arrested Akhtar Hossain as the main accused.
The incident occurred at a convention hall in Sylhet’s Arambagh area, where NCP’s chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari and other central leaders were present. The clash erupted when Senior Joint Member Secretary Tasmin Zara was delivering a speech, involving student movement activists and party members.
Journalists covering the event were obstructed, with some attendees attempting to seize their cameras. After Iftar, another altercation led to a physical fight, resulting in Shanto's injury.
