A clash broke out between two groups in Jamalpur during an Iftar gathering due to a shortage of food packets, leaving at least six people injured, including journalists. The incident occurred on Wednesday (March 12) evening in the Khejurtala area of Jamalpur town.
According to local sources, the family of the late Zakiul Hasan Sabu, former president of the Microbus Workers' Union, organized a prayer and Iftar gathering in his memory in the Khejurtala area. As the distribution of Iftar meals began, a dispute arose between local residents and microbus drivers when the number of food packets fell short, leading to a heated altercation.
Upon receiving reports of the clash, journalists rushed to the scene to capture footage of the incident. However, shortly after the police arrived, three journalists—Riyad (28), the Jamalpur district correspondent for Desh TV; Salauddin Mithu (30), a journalist for Dainik Desh Sangbad newspaper; and Sanjidul Akand Mashfiq (27), a cameraman for DBC News—were severely beaten in front of the police. The attackers also forcibly took away three mobile phones and ID cards from the journalists.
Besides the journalists, three other individuals sustained injuries during the incident. They have been identified as Zahidul Islam Asheq (22) and Jihan (14), both sons of Manju Hasan Musa from the Tetulia area of Jamalpur town, and Shubho (35) from the Muslimabad area.
All the injured victims have been admitted to Jamalpur General Hospital for treatment.
