Citycell, Bangladesh's first CDMA mobile operator, is planning a comeback with advanced technology to offer affordable call rates. After its license was revoked in 2016 and its operations halted, the company has faced financial difficulties and accumulated unpaid dues. In a recent letter to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), Citycell attributed the shutdown to political reasons and requested the reinstatement of its operating licenses. The company claimed a total loss of BDT 4,000 crore, citing both missed revenue and infrastructure damage. Citycell is also seeking a technology-neutral license that would include 5G. BTRC has acknowledged the request and will review it according to legal procedures.
