In Gazipur’s Sripur, locals captured four members of the banned organization Chhatra League and handed them over to police. Locals claimed that sticks and crude bombs were recovered from them.
The incident took place late Monday night (August 11) at Dhanuya-Bhutulia Gulistan intersection in Sripur upazila, as they were allegedly preparing to hold a torch procession. The detainees are Md. Nahid Hasan (22), Soyshob Bepari (21), Shibbir Mondol (19), and Dinar Ahmed (21).
According to local sources, around midnight, about 50 leaders and activists led by Upazila Chhatra League Joint Convener Hridoy Sheikh were preparing for the march. Locals gathered upon spotting them at the Gulistan sand field near the Meghna factory. Noticing the crowd, the Chhatra League members tried to flee. Eventually, locals chased and caught four of them and handed them over to police. Sticks, petrol, and crude bombs were reportedly recovered from their possession.
Gazipur Union Chhatra Dal President Tanvir Ahmed said, “After hearing about the planned procession, we, along with locals, chased them. Many fled, but four Chhatra League members were caught. They admitted they were preparing for the torch procession and were handed over to police.”
Sripur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Abdul Barik said they rushed to the scene upon receiving information and detained the suspects, recovering several items allegedly intended for subversive activities. A case has been filed, and the detainees will be produced in court on Tuesday.
