In Khulna, police arrested three young men last Monday for allegedly demanding 2 million taka in extortion while claiming to be members of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) district branch. They were apprehended from a house on Nesar Uddin Road under Sonadanga Police Station.
Although the suspects identified themselves as NCP leaders, a review of their Facebook profiles revealed that one of them, Al Naim, is not affiliated with the NCP but is connected to BNP’s student wing, Chhatra Dal. The other two arrested are Mehedi Hasan Miraj and Miraj Gazi.
Al Naim’s Facebook activity shows that he was a student at Khulna Polytechnic Institute and had been regularly attending Chhatra Dal meetings and gatherings since August 5. He frequently shared photos and videos of party leaders on his profile. On January 15, he also shared a photo card on Facebook promoting the BNP candidate for Khulna-4, claiming that extortion and tolls would be stopped at Rupsha Ghat.
Netizens have been mocking the incident on social media, commenting that “the one who wants to stop extortion ends up getting arrested for extortion.”
Sonadanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Rafiqul Islam confirmed the incident, stating that the matter is under investigation. A case will be filed at the police station, and legal action will be taken against the suspects if a complaint is lodged by the affected family.
