Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has launched a campaign to vaccinate over 15,000 stray dogs to protect city residents from rabies.
The programme was inaugurated by CCC Mayor Dr. Sahadat Hossain yesterday (4 January) in front of the Divisional Commissioner’s office.
To address the growing stray dog population and associated risks, CCC has opted for humane and scientific methods instead of culling. During the scheduled six-day campaign, vulnerable dogs across all 41 wards of the city will receive vaccinations.
Speaking at the inauguration, Mayor Sahadat emphasized the city’s goal to become clean, green, healthy, and safe. He noted that vaccinating at least 70% of dogs in an area achieves herd immunity, effectively preventing the spread of rabies, and stressed that killing dogs is not a sustainable solution.
The mayor also highlighted signs of rabid dogs, such as excessive salivation, erratic running, and biting tendencies, and urged residents to treat animals kindly—avoiding disturbance while they eat or sleep, and refraining from throwing stones or running away.
The event was attended by CCC Acting Chief Executive Officer and Secretary Mohammad Ashraful Amin, Chief Health Officer Mohammad Imam Hossain Rana, Chattogram Bar Association President Abdus Sattar, General Secretary Hasan Ali Chowdhury, and other senior city officials.
