A man from Winnipeg, Canada, is taking legal action against his former girlfriend, alleging that she disappeared with his CA$5 million lottery prize (approximately Rs 30 crore) and ran off with another man. The man, Lawrence Campbell, claims that he purchased the winning lottery ticket in 2024 but was unable to collect the prize himself due to not having a valid form of identification. On the recommendation of lottery officials, he turned to his then-girlfriend, Krystal Ann McKay, asking her to claim the winnings on his behalf. At the time, the two had been in a serious, year-long relationship, and Campbell says he had complete trust in her.
Initially, everything appeared to go smoothly. The couple even took celebratory photos together holding the giant cheque for the prize money. But according to Campbell, things took a sudden and shocking turn just days later. McKay allegedly vanished without warning, severed all communication with him, and even went so far as to obtain a protection order against him. Suspicious of her sudden disappearance, Campbell later discovered McKay in the company of another man, which led him to believe she had betrayed him.
Campbell has now filed a lawsuit in the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench. In addition to accusing McKay of deception and theft, the case also takes aim at the lottery corporations involved, claiming they provided misleading guidance and failed to properly inform him about the risks of allowing another person to claim the winnings. McKay, for her part, has denied all the accusations made against her.
