Canadian photojournalist Valerie Zink announced her resignation from Reuters on August 26 via Facebook, ending her eight-year tenure as a stringer. She said she could no longer work for an agency she accuses of “justifying and enabling” Israel’s attacks on journalists in Gaza.
Valerie pointed out that 246 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 2023 and blamed Reuters’ coverage for contributing to conditions that led to these deaths. She cited the killing of Anas al-Sharif, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Al Jazeera correspondent killed with his crew in Gaza City on August 10, criticizing Reuters for echoing Israel’s claim that al-Sharif was a Hamas operative. She also condemned the killing of Reuters cameraman Hossam al-Masri in an Israeli strike on Nasser hospital, calling it a “double tap” attack.
As a symbolic gesture, Valerie shared an image of her torn Reuters press badge and vowed to continue her work in honor of Gaza journalists, whom she called “the bravest and best to ever live.” While she did not reveal her next assignment, she stressed that she cannot continue with an agency she believes failed to protect journalists and report on their deaths truthfully.
