Starting January 1, 2025, Switzerland will enforce a "burqa ban," prohibiting face coverings in public places. Anyone wearing a burqa or similar face-covering will be fined approximately $1,150 (about 137,000 Bangladeshi Taka). This decision follows a 2021 referendum in which the majority of the Swiss population voted in favor of banning face coverings, despite opposition from Muslim groups and others who voted against it. The referendum, which passed by a narrow margin, was part of a broader trend, as the same group had previously pushed for a ban on new mosque minarets in 2009. While the law will not apply in aviation, diplomatic, or consular areas, people can still cover their faces in religious and holy sites, for health, weather, or traditional reasons, during entertainment, and for personal protection (with prior approval).
