BNP leader Ishraq Hossain has temporarily suspended the ongoing movement, issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to the interim government to respond to their demands. He made the announcement upon arriving at the protest site at the Kakrail intersection on Thursday afternoon (May 22).
Earlier that day, the High Court dismissed a writ petition that had sought to prevent Ishraq Hossain from taking the oath as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). The verdict was delivered by the High Court bench of Justice Md. Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury. Following the ruling, Ishraq's legal team stated that there are no legal barriers preventing him from taking the oath.
Meanwhile, his supporters have been demonstrating in Kakrail since the morning. They were seen chanting slogans demanding that Ishraq be officially administered the oath as the DSCC mayor. In addition to this, they also called for the resignation of two advisors.
