Hossain Ali may not have eyesight, but he can diagnose and repair motorcycles just by listening to their sounds. He works as a mechanic in a small rented shop at the K.M. Latif Super Market in Mathbaria municipality of Pirojpur.
According to his family, he lost his vision about ten years ago after a brain stroke. Due to negligence in treatment, his eye condition worsened, leading to complete blindness. Yet even at 50, Hossain Ali did not give up. With sheer determination, he proved that strong willpower can overcome any obstacle. In the battle of life, he is his own true hero. He has never relied on donations or aid from others. But now, his income is not what it used to be. Although he earns between Tk 500 to 1,000 a day, there are days when he returns home empty-handed. Twice a year he needs eye injections costing around Tk 35,000. His only son, who assists him, is now suffering from kidney problems.
Hossain began learning motorcycle and generator repair at the age of nine at his brother’s workshop. Over time, he mastered the craft. Today, he identifies mechanical issues simply by sound and repairs them skillfully.
Asaduzzaman Asad, a biker who regularly comes to him for repairs, said that despite being blind, Hossain Ali works with remarkable accuracy. “He is experienced and well-known. Many people come here for repairs. I always bring my bike to him. He can handle everything, including engine work,” he added.
Shibu Majumder, a resident of the municipality, told RTV that Hossain Ali has two children. His wife, Salma Begum, has lost one kidney. Although he receives Tk 2,500 in disability allowance every three months, it is barely enough in today’s high-cost market. He believes affluent members of society should come forward to support Hossain Ali.
Upazila Social Services Officer Md. Shafiqul Alam said that they have already provided Hossain Ali with a disability allowance card. “I have heard he is an excellent mechanic. If any other support can be arranged, we will certainly provide it,” he said.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Kaiyum said, “Hossain Ali is a talented motor mechanic. The administration has supported him whenever possible, and now that I am aware of his family’s situation, I will look into further assistance.”
