Barishal Medical Student Dies by Suicide, Citing 'Excessive Academic Pressure'
Sajib Baroi, a third-year student of the 50th batch in the Microbiology Department at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC), has died by suicide after reportedly succumbing to intense academic pressure.
According to his classmates, Sajib was struggling with severe depression, particularly because he was still in the third year while many of his peers had already passed their MBBS exams and begun internships. They say the academic setback left him emotionally and mentally drained.
On the night of Thursday, 22 May, Sajib reportedly injected himself with a combination of Clonazepam and Fluoxetine in an attempt to take his own life. His roommates discovered his condition and immediately rushed him to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH), where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Despite efforts to save him, Sajib passed away on the afternoon of 24 May while undergoing treatment.
Before his death, Sajib left a handwritten note that read: "I am tired of constantly fighting with myself. I just want some rest. Please forgive me. I couldn't return the love you gave me."
His roommate, Suman Halder, shared that Sajib often fell ill and struggled to keep up with academic demands. “He had a deep fear of classes and exams,” Suman said. “The pressure was too much for him.”
