Shariful Islam, a leader of the banned Chhatra League at Barishal University, surrendered by calling the national emergency hotline 999 on Thursday night (January 23). After his surrender, police arrested him and sent him to jail through court proceedings. Barishal Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman confirmed the arrest but did not disclose the specific case under which Shariful was detained.
University sources indicated that Shariful is accused of attacking students involved in the anti-discrimination movement at Barishal University. He also faces charges of extortion, drug trafficking, land grabbing, and has five cases filed against him in Kotwali and Bandar police stations. Furthermore, he has a history of assaulting police officers, leading to his previous arrest, though he was later released due to his political connections with former mayors Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah and Khokon Serniabat.
