Engineer Tasruzzaman Babu from the Lalmonirhat Railway Division is set to receive the prestigious Silver Stevie Award 2025 in recognition of his groundbreaking innovation in railway technology. He is being honoured as the Most Innovative Technology Leader of the Year by the renowned U.S.-based Stevie Awards for his remarkable achievement in developing a locally engineered automatic turntable, designed to rotate train engines and coaches. This turntable is the first of its kind in South Asia and has been widely applauded for its originality and effectiveness, earning commendation from both the Ministry of Railways and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
Since taking on the role of Chief Mechanical Engineer (Carriage and Wagon) in September 2022 at the Lalmonirhat Railway Division, Tasruzzaman Babu has spearheaded numerous technological advancements. Among his most significant contributions is the successful creation and implementation of Bangladesh’s first domestically built train turntable, strategically installed on a 9-acre site northeast of Lalmonirhat Railway Station. In addition to this, he has introduced a highly durable wheelset guide, re-railing equipment designed to respond to train accidents efficiently, and an electric lifting jack to aid in coach repairs. These pioneering solutions have significantly reduced the railway division's dependence on imported equipment, marking a major step toward self-reliance and modernisation within the 122-year-old division.
His innovations have not only enhanced operational efficiency but have also drawn admiration from professional peers and heartfelt pride from his mother. Tasruzzaman Babu’s visionary work will be formally celebrated at the official award ceremony scheduled to take place on May 13, 2025, in Seoul, South Korea.
