Bangladesh is taking steps to introduce its first-ever vaccination cards for animals through a joint initiative by icddr,b and the Department of Livestock Services (DLS). The goal is to strengthen the country’s animal health system, increase immunisation coverage, and lower the risk of zoonotic diseases. These cards will document key details such as animal identification, vaccination records, and future schedules, enabling both farmers and authorities to monitor and manage vaccinations more effectively across livestock, poultry, and pets.
The initiative comes in response to ongoing challenges, including low vaccination rates, lack of awareness, and weak monitoring mechanisms. Experts highlight that around 70% of emerging infectious diseases in Bangladesh are zoonotic in nature. By improving tracking, surveillance, and coordination, the programme aims to reduce animal deaths, boost productivity, protect livelihoods, and contribute to safer food systems as well as overall public health.
