Bangladesh has received 30,000 metric tonnes of potash fertiliser as a donation from the Russian Federation under the World Food Programme (WFP) framework. The fertiliser—muriate of potash (MOP)—was provided by Uralchem, one of Russia’s leading fertiliser manufacturers.
The handover ceremony took place today (19 January 2026) at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) auditorium. Agriculture and Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury attended as the chief guest, while Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander G. Khozin was present as the special guest. Agriculture Secretary Dr Md Emdad Ullah Mian presided over the event.
Speaking at the ceremony, the agriculture adviser highlighted that global food and fertiliser supply has become a major challenge due to climate change, international market instability, and multiple global crises. "In such times, international cooperation and partnerships are more crucial than ever. Today’s initiative is a prime example of constructive global collaboration," he said.
He also pointed out that the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) currently holds a fertiliser stock—excluding urea—of 1.035 million metric tonnes, the highest since the organisation’s establishment in 1961.
The adviser further noted significant growth in the agriculture sector during the tenure of the current interim government. Compared to the previous three years, rice production rose by 6% in FY2024–25, potato production by 14%, onion production by 22%, vegetable production by 3.7%, and mustard production saw a remarkable increase of 86%.
