Every December, The Economist names a "country of the year" based on notable progress over the past year. Past recipients include Colombia, Ukraine, Malawi, and Greece. This year, the shortlist featured Poland, South Africa, Argentina, Syria, and Bangladesh. Poland was recognized for rebuilding institutions following a government transition. South Africa established a coalition government after voters demanded reform. Argentina implemented measures to curb inflation and strengthen its economy, while Syria experienced a leadership shift after the fall of Bashar al-Assad. In Bangladesh, mass protests in August led to the ousting of Sheikh Hasina, who had governed for 15 years. A temporary technocratic government, led by Muhammad Yunus, restored stability and pledged to ensure impartial courts ahead of elections. The Economist stated: “For overthrowing a despot and making strides toward a more liberal government, Bangladesh is our country of the year.”
