Australian Home Minister Tony Burke informed Bangladesh Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury over the phone on Thursday that Australia will now process visas for Bangladeshi citizens through its High Commission in Dhaka. According to the home adviser’s statement to the council of advisers, this decision will take effect immediately.
The shift comes in response to a request made by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during Australian Home Minister Tony Burke’s visit to Bangladesh in October last year. Prior to this change, visas for Bangladeshi nationals were processed in New Delhi.
