German police arrested a Saudi man following a deadly car ramming incident at a Christmas market in Magdeburg on Friday. A vehicle plowed through a crowd of revellers at high speed, causing widespread devastation. At least two people were killed, and over 60 others were injured, according to rescue services in the city, which is about 130 kilometers southwest of Berlin. The suspect, a 50-year-old medical doctor from Saudi Arabia, has been living in Saxony-Anhalt since 2006, according to regional premier Reiner Haseloff. Speaking at the scene, which was heavily guarded by police commandos, Haseloff described the attack as a "catastrophe" for the city and the nation. He confirmed that the man acted alone and posed no further threat. Police reported that the car drove for "at least 400 meters across the Christmas market," leaving numerous casualties in its path at the central town hall square. Emergency services, including ambulances and fire engines, rushed to the scene, where cries and screams filled the air. Around 100 police officers, medics, and firefighters worked to assist the injured, who were treated on-site or transported to hospitals. City spokesman Michael Reif described the scene as "horrific," while Haseloff noted that the car, rented with Munich license plates, was used in the attack. Die Welt reported that luggage found on the passenger seat raised concerns about a possible explosive device, though authorities have not confirmed this. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reacted to the tragedy on X, stating, "The reports from Magdeburg raise the worst fears."
