The name of Assam's Karimganj district, bordering Bangladesh, has been officially changed to Sri Bhumi, along with its town, Sri Bhumi Town, following a cabinet decision in Dispur. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the move on Tuesday. While BJP workers and supporters celebrated, many locals expressed displeasure, viewing the change as abrupt and unnecessary. Critics note that Karimganj, with a Muslim majority of 55%, holds historical significance, and there was no widespread public demand for renaming. However, Hindutva groups have long advocated for the change.
