An Afghan man who murdered a man and his heavily pregnant wife has been executed in front of thousands, under the Taliban’s retaliatory punishment system. The execution took place at a sports stadium in Ghalan, the capital of Badghis province, according to the Supreme Court.
This marks the eleventh public execution since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, AFP reported. The execution was carried out in the presence of senior Taliban officials and thousands of onlookers.
The man had been sentenced to death in retaliation for murder, following a ruling upheld by the Supreme Court. The execution was approved by Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada.
The punishment came after three separate courts reviewed the case and confirmed his guilt. “He was sentenced for murdering a man and his pregnant wife,” the Supreme Court said.
