An Afghan man, Imal Mohammadi, has been stranded in Jhenaidah for nearly 50 days as he waits to take his brother’s body back to Afghanistan. Hashmat Mohammadi’s body was recovered from the Ichamati River in Maheshpur in April and buried after his identity could not initially be established.
His family later identified him through photos shared on social media. Imal came to Bangladesh with DNA records, identification documents and other papers to repatriate the body for burial according to Islamic rites.
The Home Ministry has cleared the exhumation and repatriation, but officials are awaiting formal instructions from the Foreign Ministry. The process remains delayed due to paperwork, leaving Imal in Jhenaidah.
