Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad, who was cruelly tortured and killed by members of the banned organization Chhatra League, is set to be posthumously awarded the prestigious Independence Award 2025. This announcement was made on Monday (March 3) through a Facebook post shared by Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, an adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives.
The post described Abrar Fahad as "a symbol of courage against injustice, a reflection of free thought." It went on to state that receiving the Independence Award 2025 posthumously is a recognition of his sacrifice and enduring legacy. His ideals continue to inspire the nation and encourage the pursuit of justice. "The nation will not forget you, Abrar," the post concluded, emphasizing the lasting impact of his life and sacrifice.
Abrar Fahad's tragic death occurred on October 6, 2019, when he was brutally beaten by a group of Chhatra League leaders and activists under the suspicion of his involvement in certain political activities. His merciless murder sparked widespread outrage across Bangladesh. In 2021, the court sentenced 20 BUET students to death for their role in the heinous crime, further highlighting the severity of the injustice that claimed his life.
