Nine students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) were detained by the proctorial team for consuming alcohol during New Year celebrations. They were later released after signing an undertaking. The incident occurred early Tuesday (December 31) at around 12:30 AM, when the proctorial team conducted a raid in a secluded area on the campus known as Sundarban. Among those detained were five female and four male students. Additionally, students from the Departments of Fine Arts and Drama & Dramatics were found defying a university ban by organizing a barbecue party in a remote jungle area. Using CCTV footage from key locations on campus, the proctorial team tracked the students to Sundarban, where they found two bottles of both local and foreign liquor. The students were discovered sitting in two separate groups, some intoxicated. While one group admitted to consuming alcohol, the other claimed to only be carrying it. The raid was led by Professor Rashidul Alam, the university’s proctor. During questioning, the students revealed that outsiders had brought the alcohol onto the campus at the invitation of JU students. The group then gathered in the secluded Sundarban area to consume the liquor.
