After suffering a critical gunshot wound to the head during the July uprising, 7-year-old Basit Khan Musa has shown miraculous signs of recovery. His mother, Nishamoni, shared the deeply emotional moment when Musa, after 9 and a half months of silence, called her “Maa” — a word she had longed to hear. That unforgettable moment came on May 1st and filled her heart with hope.
Since the incident, Musa has undergone multiple surgeries in Singapore — more than 20 major operations — and is currently receiving intensive therapy at Dhaka's CMH hospital. Though he remains paralyzed on the right side of his body and continues to face serious health issues, there is cautious optimism among his doctors and family regarding his recovery.
Once completely silent — unable to even cry out in pain — Musa has now begun to speak simple words. His speech is limited, but each word is a milestone. Alongside his physical therapy, he has resumed studying at home with noticeable enthusiasm. His mother continues to dream of the day he will once again run into her arms, joyfully calling out “Maa” just like he used to.
