Starting next month, 55 lakh low-income and poor families across Bangladesh will receive 30 kilograms of rice each month at a subsidised rate of Tk15 per kilogram, according to Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Tuesday, he announced that the government’s food-friendly programme will resume in August. Under the initiative, eligible families will receive 30 kg of rice per month for six months.
To ensure food security and address the impact of ongoing floods, the government is preparing to import 400,000 metric tonnes of rice. Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce has been directed to enable the private sector to import another 500,000 metric tonnes.
The subsidised rice will be distributed in August, September, October, and November. The programme will pause temporarily in December and January, before resuming again in February and March.
