Police have detained 54 leaders and activists affiliated with the Awami League and its associate organizations in connection with an attack on the vehicle of Hasnat Abdullah, the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) chief organizer for the southern region. The incident occurred in Gazipur.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Additional Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Haque confirmed on Monday that preparations are underway to file a case regarding the incident. Multiple police teams have been deployed to identify and apprehend those involved in the attack.
Among the detainees are Nizam Uddin, a Jubo League leader from Ward 13 of Gazipur City, and Masum Ahmed (also known as Dipu), the president of the Sheikh Russell Shishu Kishor Parishad. They were arrested during a raid in the Basan area on Sunday night.
According to Deputy Commissioner Rabiul Hasan, the attack occurred on Sunday evening near Chandana Chowrasta. Quoting the vehicle’s driver, he said the assailants approached from behind on a motorcycle and shattered the car’s windows. Senior police officials responded promptly, initiating a series of raids in the area.
While two individuals were initially detained, the ongoing operation has now resulted in a total of 54 arrests. All of the detainees are reportedly affiliated with the ruling party or its allied organizations.
The attack sparked demonstrations by students and members of the public in various parts of the city, including Bypass Mor, Board Bazar, and Chandana Chowrasta, later that night.
Sarjis Alam, NCP’s chief coordinator for the northern region, highlighted the incident in a Facebook post. Police were subsequently able to locate Hasnat Abdullah and ensure his safety.
Protesters have called for the immediate arrest of those responsible, and the NCP is expected to announce a formal protest program on Monday.
