Food Advisor Ali Imam Mujumder has announced that the country currently holds 1.3 million metric tons of rice and wheat in stock. He assured that the government is implementing measures to maintain stable prices of essential goods during the upcoming Ramadan.
Under the Food-Friendly Program, 50 lakh families will receive 30 kilograms of rice at a subsidized rate of 15 Taka per kilogram during Ramadan. Additionally, in celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, one crore families will be provided with one lakh metric tons of rice as a gift.
Ali Imam Mujumder shared these updates during a press briefing following a meeting on "Strengthening Measures to Prevent Food Grain Smuggling" at the Cox’s Bazar District Commissioner’s office on Thursday (February 13).
He emphasized that there is no risk of a food crisis in the country. However, he noted concerns about a potential crisis arising from the ongoing civil war in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. To address this, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and other law enforcement agencies have been instructed to tighten border surveillance and prevent food grain smuggling to Myanmar.
The advisor highlighted that, with one crore families receiving one lakh metric tons of rice under the Food-Friendly Program during Ramadan and Eid, ensuring strict border security is essential to prevent cross-border smuggling.
