A 20-year-old woman named Sultana Parvin from Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat died by suicide after an AI-generated obscene video, edited using her likeness, was circulated among her family and relatives. The incident took place at her parents’ home on Sunday noon. She reportedly used a veil to end her life and left behind a note accusing Mohammad Nahin Sheikh Mridul, her husband’s sister’s husband, of sharing the doctored video.
Sultana had been married for ten months to Ashraful Islam Anik, an expatriate living in Japan. Her mother, Firoza Begum, filed a case against Anik and his family members with Aditmari Police Station on Thursday night, alleging their role in mentally torturing Sultana, which led to her suicide. Sultana’s brother, Alimul Islam, claimed that Mridul created and spread the video using a fake WhatsApp account, leading to a rift between the couple. Anik had stopped communicating with Sultana and threatened to divorce her.
In response, Anik said in a video message that tensions arose after Sultana had an argument with Mridul, and that the mental stress caused her death. Mridul, on the other hand, alleged that Anik was involved with another woman and only married Sultana due to family pressure. He denied distributing the video widely, saying he only showed it to his wife and blamed Anik’s family for mentally torturing Sultana.
Police have recovered the body and completed an autopsy at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital. An investigation into the case is ongoing, according to Officer-in-Charge Ali Akbar.
