Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has pledged to safeguard national interests in discussions with neighboring and other countries. Responding to criticism over his transition from National Security Advisor under the interim government to Foreign Minister in the elected administration, he suggested that those alleging “election engineering” could call for a recount of the votes if they wished.
The comments were made on Wednesday evening (February 18) after a meeting with Nepalese Foreign Minister Bala Nand Sharma at the state guesthouse, Padma.
Regarding election engineering allegations, Khalilur Rahman said, “I did not become a minister by choice. Those raising claims about election manipulation are welcome to recount the votes.”
He also noted that although the BNP previously demanded his resignation, circumstances have changed over time.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid was also present, emphasizing that the country’s foreign policy will be guided by the interests of the people.
