Sixteen school and college students were detained by locals for engaging in anti-social activities at Regent Park and Resort in Sylhet’s Dakshin Surma on January 19. The crowd vandalized the resort and set several rooms on fire. The resort has long been suspected of being a place for illegal gatherings, where students and lovers rent rooms for such activities. Locals from Sillam area arrested the students, releasing eight into their families' custody. The remaining eight were married off by a local qazi, with dowries ranging from Tk 10 lakh to Tk 12 lakh. Four of the couples hailed from Dakshin Surma, Bishwanath, and Osmani Nagar. Police confirmed the situation was brought under control, but the officer was unaware of the marriages arranged by the locals.
