Laurent Simons, famously known as “Belgium’s little Einstein,” has earned a PhD in quantum physics from the University of Antwerp at the age of just 15. Flemish broadcaster VTM reported that Laurent successfully defended his doctoral thesis last week, an achievement experts describe as one of the fastest PhD completions in the field.
His research delved into highly complex topics, including Bose polarons in superfluid and supersolid systems—areas usually explored much later in an academic career.
While there is no official global ranking for the youngest PhD holders, specialists emphasize that Laurent’s achievement is extraordinary, even among prodigies. His accelerated academic journey began early: he started primary school at age four and completed it by six. By 12, he had already earned a master’s degree in quantum physics, studying advanced concepts such as bosons and black holes. Teachers have praised him for his exceptional focus and deep interest in advanced scientific problems.
