14y/o raped in Sherpur; Mother attempts suicide after incident revealed

While visiting the Ghazni Abash Picnic Spot in Sherpur, a ninth-grade schoolgirl was sexually assaulted. After the incident, the victim's mother, overcome with guilt, tried to kill herself by ingesting poison. The mother was very ill when she was brought to Sadar Hospital on Tuesday night, February 18. For better care, she was then sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. On Valentine's Day, the student was visiting the Ghazni Abash center in Jhinaigati upazila of Sherpur with her companions when she was raped by a local troublemaker, Ilias (35), from the Kalinagar region, according to police and local residents on February 14.

In an effort to hide the occurrence, the victim's family was persuaded by the accused's powerful family to not report it. On the night of February 18, when the incident was made public, the girl's mother ingested poison in a nearby bush out of dread of social disgrace. After being saved by her relatives, she was initially brought to Jhinaigati Health Complex. As her condition deteriorated, she was then sent to Sherpur Sadar Hospital and then to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. In relation to this occurrence, the OC (Officer-in-Charge) confirmed that attempts are being made to arrest the offenders.
