A 17-year-old schoolgirl, Fatema Akter Lily, was brutally murdered in Banshree, Dhaka, her throat slit with a sharp weapon.
The incident occurred on Saturday (January 10) between 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm at a house named “Preetom Villa” on the main road of South Banshree. Lily was a tenth-grade student at Radiant School.
OC Mohammad Shafiqul Islam of Khilgaon Police Station confirmed the incident.
According to police and family sources, Lily’s family is originally from Bamaïn village, Lakhai Upazila, Habiganj District. Her father’s name is Sajeeb Mia, and the family rents a house in Banshree.
Lily’s elder sister, Shobha, said their parents had gone to their village on January 7 regarding a land dispute. The family runs a hotel. On Thursday night, around 11 pm, a hotel employee named Milon visited their home to bring food, and Lily reportedly behaved poorly with him. On Saturday afternoon, Milon again came to deliver food. Shobha, who was at the gym, returned home to find the house door open and the rooms in disarray.
She discovered her sister curled up under a large utensil and initially thought Lily had been injured on the head. Upon lifting her hijab, she saw a rope around Lily’s neck and her throat slashed. Shobha suspects the hotel employee Milon of the crime.
Shobha also claimed that no neighbors or the landlord helped when they tried to take Lily to the hospital. With the help of a friend, they transported her by rickshaw to Farazi Hospital.
OC Mohammad Shafiqul Islam said police arrived at the scene in the afternoon after receiving information. Lily’s body was later recovered from Farazi Hospital.
He added, “At the hospital, it was evident that her throat had been cut. The motive behind this murder is still unknown. The police are investigating.”
