A new study by the Pew Research Center suggests that the internet is losing vast amounts of content as web pages are deleted or moved. Of the webpages from 2013, 38% are now gone, and 8% of those from 2023 have also disappeared. This content loss primarily occurs on active websites rather than due to entire websites vanishing. The disappearing content includes significant news and reference material, with 23% of news pages, 21% of government sites, and 54% of Wikipedia pages containing broken links. Additionally, a fifth of tweets vanish within months. The study analyzed nearly a million webpages from Common Crawl and found that 25% of pages from 2013-2023 are no longer available.
