Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced that Spain will deploy a naval warship to join Italy in safeguarding the Global Sumud Flotilla, which is attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza despite Israel’s blockade. The flotilla, made up of around 50 civilian boats carrying participants from 45 countries, including activist Greta Thunberg, recently came under drone attacks off the coast of Greece.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Sanchez emphasized the importance of upholding international law and protecting civilians, noting that Spain’s warship will provide assistance or rescue if required. The flotilla’s mission is to deliver food and show solidarity with Palestinians, while Israel has criticized the effort, claiming it indirectly supports Hamas.
