A huia bird feather, a rare item from the extinct New Zealand species, sold at auction for NZD$46,521 (US$28,365), far surpassing its estimated value of NZD$2,000-$3,000 and setting a record for the most expensive feather ever sold. The feather's previous record was NZD$8,400 in 2010. The huia, extinct since the early 20th century, was sacred to Māori and its feathers were once highly coveted, contributing to the bird's decline. The feather, well-preserved and protected by archival paper and UV glass, drew significant interest, though only from registered New Zealand collectors due to legal restrictions. Leah Morris of Webb’s auction house noted the feather’s excellent condition and iconic status drove up its value. The auction, attended by about 30 people, saw all bids placed online or by phone, ending with applause as the final bid was accepted .
