Bangladeshi-origin politicians have continued to strengthen their presence in American politics, securing notable victories in the US midterm elections. Among the successful candidates are Georgia State Senator Sheikh Rahman, Connecticut State Senator Md Masudur Rahman and New Hampshire legislator Abul Khan, who have retained or won their respective seats.
Sheikh Rahman, a Democratic Party politician representing Georgia State Senate District 5, has secured re-election without facing an opponent in the general election. Preliminary election results recorded 35,101 votes in his favour. Earlier, on May 19, he secured his party's nomination by defeating fellow candidate Robin McCoy in the Democratic primary. Born in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh, Sheikh Rahman made history in 2018 when he became the first Muslim and Asian-origin state senator in Georgia. Since then, he has continued to represent the district, establishing a significant presence in the state's political landscape. His latest victory marks another milestone in his political career. Notably, his younger brother, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Iqbal, was also elected as an independent member of parliament from Kishoreganj-5 in Bangladesh's 13th parliamentary election.
Meanwhile, Md Masudur Rahman has retained his seat in Connecticut State Senate District 4 after defeating Republican candidate Jen Jennings. Preliminary results reported by local media confirmed his victory, allowing him to continue representing his constituency as a Democratic Party senator.
Masudur Rahman has family roots in Hajiganj, Chandpur, Bangladesh. He first entered Connecticut's State Senate in 2022 and won a second consecutive term in the 2024 election with a significant number of votes. His latest success further extends his political career and maintains Bangladeshi-origin representation in the state's legislature.
Another notable victory came from New Hampshire, where Abul Khan won the election in the Rockingham 30 district. A member of the Republican Party, Khan has been active in the state's political arena for more than a decade. Born in Pirojpur, Bangladesh, he has represented constituencies in the New Hampshire legislature since 2012. Having previously completed six consecutive terms, his latest victory adds another achievement to his long-standing political career. He had initially led in the preliminary vote count before his victory was confirmed in the final results.
The success of these three politicians reflects the growing participation of the Bangladeshi diaspora in American political institutions. Their achievements across different states and political parties demonstrate that Bangladeshi-origin Americans are increasingly taking part in the country's democratic and legislative processes.
This progress was also evident in the 2024 US elections, when five Bangladeshi-origin politicians, Sheikh Rahman, Nabila Islam Parks, Nurun Nabi, Md Masudur Rahman and Abul Khan were elected to public office in different states. The latest victories add to this record of political participation, highlighting the continued contribution of the Bangladeshi-American community to public service and state-level governance in the United States. Their electoral successes also represent an important development for a diaspora community seeking a stronger voice in American political life.
