She began her education in 1936, graduated with a bachelor’s in 1940, and started her master's before pausing to marry George Hislop during WWII. She later had a significant career in Washington state politics, contributing to education. Her son-in-law recently found she had met all requirements for graduation except a now-dropped thesis. On June 16, she received her degree to a standing ovation, remarking, "I’ve waited a long time for this."
