United Commercial Bank (UCB) is poised to acquire the financially distressed National Bank Ltd (NBL), as revealed in a recent meeting led by Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder. While NBL faces a record loss of Tk 3,285 crore from 2022 and a default rate of 25% on its loans, UCB remains profitable, with a net gain of Tk 402 crore and a nonperforming loan rate of 5.99%. The acquisition is supported by the central bank through policy backing and the offloading of NBL's default loans to an asset management company. Although the deal is not yet confirmed, UCB officials highlighted NBL's potential strengths in remittance and export sectors.
