Chaos erupted in Taiwan's Parliament on Friday over a contentious reform bill. Amidst the turmoil, MP Guo Guowen dramatically seized the bill documents to prevent its passage, as captured in an online video. The disruption came just before President-elect Lai Ching-te's inauguration, despite his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lacking a legislative majority. The Kuomintang (KMT), the main opposition party, holds more seats than the DPP and is collaborating with the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) to bolster parliamentary oversight of the government. Clashes erupted both outside and inside the chamber, resulting in one lawmaker's hospitalization. The DPP criticized the KMT and TPP for bypassing proper consultation, calling it an "unconstitutional abuse of power." In contrast, KMT's Jessica Chen defended the reforms as necessary for executive oversight. Notably, in 2020, KMT members had used pig guts to protest US pork imports.
