Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has revealed that one of her household staff members, Jahangir Alam, has amassed a fortune worth Tk400 crore. Alam, also known as "Pani Jahangir," was a staff member at her residence during her opposition tenure. He later identified himself as the prime minister's personal assistant and engaged in lucrative activities, amassing wealth and properties in Noakhali and Dhaka. Jahangir has acquired multiple plots and flats in Dhaka, including a 2,500-square-foot flat in Dhanmondi and an eight-storey house in Maijdee, Noakhali. He also invested in his political ambitions, holding large rallies and meetings funded by lakhs of taka. His affidavit for the 12th general election revealed assets worth over Tk2.5 crore in his name and over Tk1.25 crore in his wife's name in bank deposits. Local sources claim that Jahangir engaged in lobbying, tender manipulation, and bribery, controlling the jhut (waste fabric) business in the Gazipur EPZ area using his connections.
