The Dumbur dam, located 120 km upstream of the Gumti River in Tripura, has caused flooding in districts on the eastern borders of Bangladesh. The flood is primarily due to waters from large catchments downstream of the dam. The Dumbur dam generates power that feeds into a grid and from which Bangladesh also draws 40MW power from Tripura. Heavy rainfall has been continuing in Tripura and adjoining districts since August 21, with automatic releases observed in case of heavy inflow. Realtime flood data from Amarpur station has been transmitted to Bangladesh up to 1500 hours. However, at 1800 hours, due to flooding, there was a power outage leading to communication problems. Floods on common rivers between India and Bangladesh are a shared problem requiring close mutual cooperation. River water cooperation is an important part of bilateral engagement, and both countries remain committed to resolving issues and mutual concerns in water resources and river water management through bilateral consultations and technical discussions.
