Sornomoye Biswas (28), a graphic designer at the online news outlet Dhaka Stream, was found dead at her Sher-e-Bangla Nagar residence in Dhaka on Saturday evening. Reports suggest she had recently filed a written complaint accusing Altaf Shahnewaz, head of the Bangla department, of sexual harassment. Colleagues claimed that instead of taking action, Editor-in-Chief Iftikhar Mahmud reinstated Shahnewaz, which deeply affected Sornomoye. Both Shahnewaz and Mahmud had previously worked at Prothom Alo before joining Dhaka Stream. Her family discovered her hanging in her room after repeated calls went unanswered, and police have ruled it a suicide. Friends and coworkers, however, are calling for justice, labeling the case as another example of systemic failure to protect victims of workplace harassment.
