Bangladesh Railway will halt fare rebates for passengers traveling over 100km starting May 4, causing fare increases for longer journeys. The rebate, in place since 1992, provided discounts of 20-30%. Although fares for trips up to 100km will remain unchanged, fares for most destinations are expected to rise. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved the proposal, initially slated for April 1 implementation but postponed after the Railways Minister denied plans to hike fares. Despite claims of no fare hikes, officials acknowledge that lifting the rebate will effectively increase most train fares. The last fare increase was in February 2016, following a 50% raise in October 2012, both aimed at improving services and cutting losses.
