The United Arab Emirates has pardoned 57 Bangladeshi nationals who protested in solidarity with the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. The 14 workers returned home to Dhaka and Chattogram airports. The 12 workers were convicted by the UAE Federal Court for demonstrating on July 19 during the Bangladesh uprising. Yunus had requested the UAE president to pardon the expatriate workers, and the president kept his word. On September 3, they were granted pardons by the UAE president. Three of the accused were sentenced to life, 53 were given 10-year sentences, and one was sentenced to 11 years in prison. The UAE suspended visa facilities for Bangladeshis indefinitely after the pardons. The workers returned to Dhaka and Chattogram airports.
